"Whatever Happened to Ken Dippold"
September 15th, 2008 by Mike - 1GuyTalking

Let me be plain - I do NOT think I can dance, regardless of how much I drink, who's company I'm in, or -- let's face it - I know I cannot dance. :) Last month, ironically while on a strange and all-too-short family vacation, I was contacted by our pals over at RocketXL, a web-based promotional group that we've worked with since the inception of 2GuysTalking and they asked us if we wanted to partcipate in a great new promotion that Snuggle was tossing through. Being the ever-interested online Barnum & Bailey folks that we are, we said "yes" and jumped in - with both feet so to speak.

Having never seen the show, "So You Think You Can Dance" and only having used Snuggle long enough to know that I liked the original's smell better than most of the other stuff I could smell at the food store, we ventured forward. How on EARTH could I tie in something like "Snuggle" and "So You Think You Could Dance" to my life, television and our audience. Then it hit me...

STORY TIME! Ahh, the web-based bliss of yet another Wilkerson tale.

U10 Moment of the Day:

"They talk about the Woody's Round-Up Ending and he says "check in next time to see what happens on Woody's Round-up!" and that's missing in this episode completely.  What are we going to see in the next season of "24"?"

"Caption Hunt: 30 Days - The Navajo Nation"
July 8th, 2008 by Mike - 1GuyTalking

Show Viewing Date:
7-8-2008
Show Title: 30 Days: Life on the Navajo Reservation
Network: FXHD
Reviewed By: Mike Wilkerson - 2GuysTalking.Com

Intro:

Ah, the cultural submersion-gift that is 30 Days strikes a very familiar chord today. I can remember both my mother and grandmother telling us about the "line of Cherokee indians in our family", that as it reached me is surely watered down quite a bit. I currently have no Cherokee tradition, knowledge or familiarity at all with my "indian roots' but still - this episode brings something strange into the mix that I CAN relate with. The continual eradication, both perceived and real, of a culture that fewer are learning and even fewer are interested in resurrecting.

U10 Moment of the Day:

"In a statement, Mr. Jackson said, “My appeal was for the moral content of his message to not only deal with the personal and moral responsibility of black males, but to deal with the collective moral responsibility of government and the public policy which would be a corrective action for the lack of good choices that often led to their irresponsibility.”"

"AHH THE WHITEWATER RIVER OF HOLLYWOOD..."
December 17th, 2007 by Mike - 1GuyTalking

I have to give Hollywood one thing in particular - regularly. I am always appreciative of the things I have when news arrives from the netherrealm of celebritydom.

In the headlines of CNN just now, it was announced that (insert drum-roll.wav) newlyweds Pamela Anderson and Rick Salomon are divorcing after a lackluster and expected short 9 weeks together.

In an earlier post today, I mentioned my wife and our relationship and it is simply beyond me how people that should have so much more experience, caution and realllly pot-holed over-the-Hollywood-road travel can continue to jump feet-first into holes of consequence.

"A Wendy's Wallop..."
December 16th, 2007 by Mike - 1GuyTalking

It wasn't too many months ago that Wendy's, the nation-wide fast food chain, disappeared from the St. Louis area, literally overnight. Apparently an ill-managed conglomerate that owned all of the Wendy's locally had - drowned - for lack of a better term and hence, overnight, each of the area Wendy's were boarded up, employees left hanging with either no checks or rubber ones, and the Wendy's footprint in the realm of St. Louis became smaller than even the tiniest frosty.

Fast forward to December 2007.

"The Power of The Shield"
May 8th, 2007 by Mike - 1GuyTalking

BigOrangeMichael and I have been bantering in comment systems and privately for weeks about the level of quality that The Shield is presenting this year, and folks - it is just so far above everything else out there that it is almost beyond description. I have two pieces of information in my post here - first a quick review of the pieces of the apparent power of what is pound-for-pound the best television series on the air currently, and then a grand announcement in regard to the review of that show, a new partnership and some great surprises for the Summer.

Does anyone think that the rage to censor radio DJ's and shock jocks is just a giant load of crap?  When you add that to the giant TURD SANDWICH that the RIAA is handing down in regard to internet radio stations - boy, the radio station landscape is going to be riddled with bullets over the next several years - clearly.

"Email from Tim Meyer!"
April 25th, 2007 by Mike - 1GuyTalking

I had the opportunity to get Email back from Tim Meyer, winner of The Dave Glover Survivor Show.  Again, thanks for the Email Tim.  I replied to you twice and eagerly await your response in regard to my comments and questions, but I haven't heard back from you in about a month.

In any case, it was great hearing from you and I'll link to that message shortly.

March 25th, 2007 by Mike - 1GuyTalking

While I missed last week's show, I got in about half way this week to The Tim Meyer Show and a couple of questions:

1.) Is anyone listening to this currently?  I was looking at the 97.1 website and there's no mention of the show anywhere.  ?  How are people supposed to know that the show is on?

2.) What is the model of the show?  Is it political?  Is it social based?  Were they looking for someone that is going to provide more commentary on the topics that 95% of the shows during the week are providing?

What are your thoughts on his show, his efforts and continuing efforts?

U10 Moment of the Day:

"It delays the fulfillment of our vital resources arriving to our brave troops."

"A Variety of Shows, as Survivor Continues..."
March 11th, 2007 by Mike - 1GuyTalking

My thanks to Tim Meyer for thanking me as well as all of the other competitors in the 2007 Dave Glover Survivor Series.  I hope that you have a great run, Tim, and look forward to listening to your shows. I think perhaps he also brings to light several reasons in his opening monologue, why he was selected as the winner of the contest.  1.) He has an interest in a career in Talk Radio.  I didn't, and was clear about that in not only my blogs here, but in my discussion with everyone.  I had been straight-forwardby statin from the beginning that I wanted the knowledge from the scholarship provided, but would be taking the ability to speak better in business circles to my workplace.  2.) His is a political "Reagan Conservative" show, in the vein of Hannity.  I've always been in the middle, falling toward the conservative vein, but my show had no intentions of being political at all, but would be literally a view through my 36 year-old, father, cartoonist, graphic designer and idea man life.  Without having had feedback, I hope those are the main reasons I didn't fall in the winner's category, but perhaps next year ;)

"The Announcement is Coming..."
March 4thth, 2007 by Mike - 1GuyTalking

It's always amazing how fast a week will go, and this last one was no exception.  I'd like to thank everyone that's taken the time to listen to the TINY compilation that 97.1FMTalk put together (just under 500 people so far).  I am sorry I still don't have a full show reel to provide you, but I hope to get that this week.  I also wanted to thank you for the wave of Email that I've received over the last week from coworkers, friends, and people I haven't seen in years that heard me or about me entering the contest on 97.1FMTalk.  They have all been very supportive (though a few haven't been ha!  Can't make omelets...!) and I look forward to sharing in some great news this week.  I'd like to also thank the other shows, and 97.1FMTalk for taking not only the time to participate in this contest, but for just HAVING it.  It's a great chance for so many people and I'm happy that I've been able to have a shot at something that means a great deal to me, and has the possibility to offer me something even greater to round out my workplace and professional life.  Cross your fingers, folks!

I've put up the compilation file that 97.1FMTalk put up until I can get a full reel up on the site.  Let me know what you think of what you hear and remember that you can listen to all of the full shows here, or listen to little segments at the 97.1FMTalk website.  Click anywhere you see the word "help" on this page and you'll be taken to the area to rank my show. Remember you'll need to register for the "Insider" treatment from 97.1FMTalk. Thanks for your support, feedback and input - without it it wouldn't be the learning experience it has been.

"And It Goes to the Score Cards..."
February 23rd, 2007 by Mike - 1GuyTalking

And the show is in the can!  My thanks to everyone that helped me this last month get prepared, gather ideas and pull of a solid showing on the Dave Glover Survivor Series this afternoon!  There were far too many "dead silences" for my taste, but that helps me put a goal on future shows of understanding when the commercial breaks will come and how to better "hit" them as they roll by.  My thanks to Jeff Allen, Tom Turbrock. Karen Kelly, and the rest of the folks down at the Powerhouse who took their time to make me feel welcome and hopefully usher me into a new realm of communication.  I'll post the show just as soon as possible.  The file I was provided with before I left is "44k" - much smaller than it should be so we'll get with the powers that be in the next day to get another copy.  Click this link to rate the show (assuming you've heard it) and return to see what happens over the next week of voting time.

"Sneak Peak for Tomorrow's Show..."
February 22nd, 2007 by Mike - 1GuyTalking

Tomorrow, as previously announced, I will be interviewing everyone's favorite  (and only) 24 Production Designer, Joseph Hodges to talk about the hit Fox show, "24".  Prior to his interview we'll be inviting callers to call in and chat/talk about this season of "24"  during my "24" Corner". This will be a regularly-occurring showcase during which we'll listen to an always-short soundbite reviewing the previous episode called the "24 in 60+!" that reviews the entire episode in just a few humorous minutes.  I've posted tomorrow's 24 in 60+! ahead of schedule and invite you to a sneak peak listen by clicking here!

"Totally Surreal..."
February 22nd, 2007 by Mike - 1GuyTalking

Let me set the stage for you for a moment.  All this week I had been wondering when I would hear "The 1GuyTalking 97.1FMTalk Glover Show Talk Survivor Series" promo.  I had been paying focused attention all week listening on and off and hadn't heard it yet.  At 1am this morning, I headed to pick up my wife work work. While filling up at the local Quik Trip, in dead silence, I exited my vehicle to pump fuel with the keys in the ignition.  As Crane Durham went to break, I heard the characteristic introduction holla' of the Glover Talk Show Survivor promo snippets - this was IT! "Hey You Glover Lovers..."
February 21st, 2007 by Mike - 1GuyTalking

I had the incredible fortune to visit with Dave Glover and Tom Turbrock this last Saturday. I made my way on an incredibly crappy weathered-Saturday to Intellibed, where Dave & Tom were doing a live remote from 11-1pm.  During my visit we talked about the contest, his show and specifically some bits on the show that always get my cartoonist motor running.  From that, I created this art (see it at right) that I gave Dave and Tom a master copy of:  Enjoy and be sure to listen to the clip that spawned this cartoon!  It's a riot!

"This Friday: '24's Production Designer on 1GT"
February 20th, 2007 by Mike - 1GuyTalking

I have the utmost pleasure in announcing that 24's Production Designer Joseph Hodges will be appearing for an all-too-short interview this week Friday on my live, on-air 1GuyTalking Show featured on 97.1FMTalk.  Joseph is a long-time friend of my "2GuysTalking: 24 Podcast" efforts and it will be great to have him on the show this Friday.  Make sure you tell all of your 24-philes about his short but hopefully first of many appearances on 97.1Talk.

I was talking to a variety of people this last week and I have to tell you - in the instance that I should win this contest, the shows that I I will be given will be filled with a variety of interviews that will ROCK.  I have a line up of real-world Hollywood creators, nationally and internationally syndicated columnists and more to talk both about the entertainment they create and review.  First up, is this week Friday, my 1GuyTalking Launching show, where we will feature none other than our favorite Production Designer from the hit Fox show, "24", Joseph Hodges.  I'd like to thank Joseph for taking the time out of his crazy work weeks to give us what will be an all too short interview for us in regard to 24.  Be sure to spread the word and please feel free to send in questions.  I already have a long list from my "2GuysTalking: 24 Podcast" efforts, but more are always welcome.

"What Do You Get?"
February 19th, 2007 by Mike - 1GuyTalking

I was cycling through some Email this morning before lunch and got an Email from Danny in South St. Louis.  He writes:

"What happens when someone wins the Dave Glover Survivor Series Contest?  Do you get your own show on radio?  I don't understand how you get your own show like Sean Hannity has by winning a radio contest."

Hi Danny and thanks for your interest.  The "prizes" provided for the show that "win" the Dave Glover Survivor Series Contest include:  Your own show every Sunday in March from 8-9pm, and internship with the Dave Glover Show (which I'm hoping to be able to pull off with some focus on communication, etc), and (what I'm focusing on) a full-ride scholarship to The Broadcast Center.  I look forward to learning more about the process of communication from the Broadcast Center, so that I can bring it to my workplace where I think everyone will admit that communications could use a kick in the ass.

Thanks again for your question, Danny and have a great day!

"Welcome Work Time..."
February 19th, 2007 by Mike - 1GuyTalking

I have the benefit/curse of having 9 days left of vacation to take before the 15th of next month or I lose them, so I'll be taking four this week to create my final intro reel, my commercial bumper inserts in and out, and to format the final disc that I'll take to the show on Friday.  I was going to go in earlier this week to talk to the program director as is required and show him my schedule of goodies I've got planned.  I also wanted to thank everyone again for the support both via Email and personally - I was with someone I'd never met inside a pool of friends recently who said "break a leg Friday, dude" and after smiling and staring for several seconds I said "Oh, thanks a ton!  I appreciate that."  When I asked him where he'd heard about it he said that he'd seen my picture on 97.1Talk.Com Website. It's times like that that things get a bit surreal but fun all the same.  Stay tuned this week and I'll post up everything I'm going to make prior to Friday's show.  A short 4 days, folks!

"Thanks for contacting me, unnamed but full-Email-address-using contestant hater. I appreciate the time you took to manufacture your short story to me.

First, to help clarify your comments, it's should be "you're", rather than your, as you used in your subject line. You're is the contraction of you and are when used in an English sentence.

Second, the people I'm competing against, aren't my enemies at all. They're (a contraction for they and are) the other people that were selected in a field of a couple of hundred so why not support them? One of us is going to be chosen and I'm more interested in fostering the contest experience as well as winning the prizes.

Lastly, wow: "DonkeyHonker" - I've got to bow down to you on that one. That's original, and truly unforgettable. Please keep them coming and don't forget to tune into The Dave Glover Survivor Series each week to help us all succeed.  Read More

February 4th, 2007 by Mike - 1GuyTalking

For those that know the realm of vocal creative talent, the words "Peter Cullen" will need no explanation.

For the rest of you, the name Peter Cullen is the gentleman who not only voiced the heroic Autobot, Optimus Prime in what is still one of the best cartoon series of all time, but also do so in the upcoming Michael Bay live-action feature-film romp in July this year.

Peter Cullen is one of the most unique voice talents ever to appear on television and screen, and a special little piece of history awaits you at the Transformers' Movie Website.  Fans submitted suggestions for Peter Cullent to read, and he---  Responded.  Enjoy the file.  It's a great one that I recorded from the site's offerings

While responding to some 1GuyTalking-commentary today, I got a great Email from our friend , Joseph Hodges, Production Designer, for the hit Fox show, "24" and he said that he'd been nominated for his production design in "24" last Season for the 2006 Art Director's Awards.  It really is fantastic news because he receives that nomination from his peers which really is a great honor.  Congratulations to Joseph!

January 25th, 2007 by Mike - 1GuyTalking

I've noticed that visits to the site have gone up radically and I would like to officially welcome those of you from either the Internet promotions I've been doing or from those of you at the Station!  I look forward to hearing more about the status of the contest and cannot wait to hear from you!  Brian and I put another 2GuysTalking: 24 show in the can and on our usual media outlets online.  You can click the link above and to the right to listen to more samples of my show heraldship and on-air fun that Brian and I always have.  Cheers!

Brian and I headed down to The Powerhouse Building this afternoon to provide my entry into the Dave Glover Survivor Radio Contest and were able to take some pictures during our visit!  My thanks to Brian for taking the time out of his day to come to the station site with me this afternoon and enjoy the pictures!

While listening to Glover today, I was jazzed to hear that "entries are now pouring in" now and that really is fantastic!  The best and most reassuring kind of win is one done within vibrant competition and I am ACHING to have it!

I burned another series of demo discs today with the new demo on it, and got the rest of the items into a manila folder to take to the station tomorrow!  Am really getting very excited about it!  While driving home today, wouldn't you know it!  Glover and company started talking about a "walking whooping cough" lady in a restaurant!  How strangely appropriate is that?!?  Cannot wait to get back and report on our experience tomorrow and look forward to more comments coming in.  The ones so far have been outstanding and very uplifting!

January 24th, 2007 by Mike - 1GuyTalking

My partner in 2GuysTalking Podcastdom, Brian Sirimaturos and I have made plans to head downtown to the 97.1FMTalk Station on Thursday afternoon on my half-day off to submit my packet and take some "as far as we can get in" pictures for posterity!  The days before the decisions made, the 'lil something that can be included in the special features DVD that will be made a year from now, after I am able to soothe a savage audience and bring them the understanding of original entertaining talk radio!  Ha!

"The Front End Changeth..."
January 23rd, 2007 by Mike - 1GuyTalking

After what has been some of the BEST 2GuysTalking: 24 episodes in our year-long career, I pulled an excerpt from one of those and inserted it as the lead intro session on my demo.  Considering how topical it is, and how surely there are more "24" listeners out there, it's a solid switch even at this late date.

"Less Entries Than Expected...?"
January 22nd, 2007 by Mike - 1GuyTalking

I was listening to the Dave Glover Show this afternoon on my way to work, and heard that there have been "many less in the way of entries than they expected" for this year's contest.  I -- I think that's a good thing, but I'm very confident in the demo I've created and look forward to getting that to them this week!  What are your thoughts on the lack of entries?  A good or a bad thing for 1GuyTalking?

I made 6 copies of my demo disc tonite, more than ready to get it all put into a manila envelope and take it down to the station.

Check the Gate...
January 14th, 2007 by Mike - 1GuyTalking

It is 4:47am and the demo is done!  I can't believe how quickly the late evening zinged by.  The Demo itself is 4:59, a second less than it needs to be according to the specs - HA!  Once again, the compiling of fodder/stories to choose from wasn't wasn't difficult, but finding the combination of parts of the stories was incredibly difficult. It's all perfect timing too!  This evening is the  beginning of a new season of "24" and there is much work to be done!  I've also been able to avoid all the spoilers that have been laid everywhere like so many landlines in the path of an advancing army.  Ha!  Be sure to download the demo and use the comment link below to tell me what you think!  I'm on my way to the chair with the suspended microphone!  I can feel it!

The Demo...  The Hard Part?
January 13th, 2007 by Mike - 1GuyTalking

I sat down after driving my wife to work and making dinner for my daughter this evening and began recording the stories/life experiences/ideas based on bullet points this evening.  I was sure that filling up time and coming up with a variety of stories would be easy, but I'll tell you - the hard part?  Picking out the pieces of stories I recorded to get just "3-5 minutes" according to the contest requirements.  I think I've found the three bits that I'll compile along with a super-short intro and exit for the demo to give them.  I'm betting that they'll really benefit from having someone that's not only got the on-air speaking talent but also the technical aspects of compiling a show.  Thoughts?

The Intro...
January 12th, 2007 by Mike - 1GuyTalking

The demo intro script is something that I've been dialoging into my U10/myself in my truck on the way home, and I think I've come up with what I want to insert.  Thoughts?

"My name is Mike Wilkerson and I am OneGuyTalking.

Its been an epic journey for me, a 36 year old cartoonist, interpreter, graphic designer and idea man - and now I'm about to be - a radio show host!

I cannot wait to see what the rest of my life has in store for me and I am eager to share my ride with you the listeners.   So join me, in my quest for a sharing of life's experience and information --

I am OneGuyTalking"

Front Page of Site - Complete!  Demo Prep Coming
January 11th, 2007 by Mike - 1GuyTalking

I love it when I get tied to a project like this and the ideas and work whip come INSTANTLY.  So we've got the front page, the blog and pseudo-commentary system set, the links to other supporting sites and links back to the contest for people to check it out. I've been making what amounts to some show prep/talking points that I'm going to sit down and dialog tonite.  My goal is to get my demo done by tomorrow evening so I can start sharing it with friends, family and co-workers so I can get their input.  Look for that here soon and be sure to send me comments from the link below!

Domain Registered - Site Starts...
January 9th, 2007 by Mike - 1GuyTalking

After downloading my Contest Entry Form yesterday from the 97.1FMTalk Website, I thought a lot about what to tall my show.  Something funny?  Something "important?"  Something close to home?  And then I thought, it's a guy, talking on the radio, providing perspective, stories and review of my life's events.  What about "1GuyTalking?"  And thus, my show's name was created.  After working with our podcast network, I've always known that silhouettes always help to create an air of modern living, also also an sense of "what the hell is that?" so I started the site theme off MY silhouette.  Thoughts on the title?  I'll get this cut up and posted this weekend for sure.

It Begins...
January 8th, 2007 by Mike - 1GuyTalking

I received a very-well-received Email this morning in my Email box.  It was the 97.1FMTalk Newsletter that arrives every week to inform me of the goings-on at a local radio station here in the St. Louis area.  One piece in general caught my attention - the reference to a the second running of a contest that I remember seeing a couple of years ago that really seemed like a great deal of fun.  You can click the link here, or hit any of the links on this site that refers to a contest, and you'll find out more about it.  The bottom line?  I want to take advantage of a great opportunity to not only discover more about the realm of mainstream talk radio but also about myself, and my ability to talk up a one guy storm!  Keep checking in here to check the status of my contest entry into the "97.1FM Talk Dave Glover Survivor Contest and leave comments below if you'd like!
